Emotional Intelligence

By Caroline

Emotional intelligence is being aware of another person's emotional state and having empathy towards how they are feeling. This is a skill that can be learnt if a person wishes to develop it — and doing so transforms every relationship in your life.

The foundation of emotional intelligence begins with self-awareness. In order to help someone, or to navigate a difficult interaction, you must first be aware of your own emotions and how they are influencing your responses.

The five pillars of emotional intelligence:

1. Self-awareness — Knowing your own emotions as they arise.

2. Self-regulation — Managing your emotions rather than reacting impulsively.

3. Motivation — Being driven by internal values, not external rewards.

4. Empathy — Genuinely feeling and understanding the emotions of others.

5. Social skills — Managing relationships and interactions with care and skill.

Developing emotional intelligence leads to better relationships, reduced conflict, greater career success, and a deeper sense of connection with the world around you. It is one of the most valuable personal development tools available.
