Feng Shui — Creating Harmony in Your Home and Life

By Caroline

The Art of Energy Flow

Feng shui — pronounced 'fung shway' — literally means wind and water in Chinese. Wind and water are the forces that carry and shape energy in the natural world — they are the visible expressions of the invisible flow of chi (life force) through the landscape. Feng shui is the ancient Chinese art and science of arranging the human built environment in harmony with this natural energy flow, so that the spaces we inhabit support rather than hinder our health, happiness, relationships and prosperity.

It is one of the oldest continuous living traditions in human civilisation — with roots stretching back over three thousand years into ancient Chinese cosmology, astronomy, landscape assessment and architectural practice. The emperors of ancient China used feng shui masters to design their palaces, cities and burial sites, understanding that the energetic quality of a space had direct and measurable consequences for the fortunes of those who occupied it.

How Feng Shui Works

Feng shui operates on the principle that chi — life force energy — flows through all spaces, and that the arrangement of those spaces either supports or obstructs that flow. When chi flows freely, smoothly and without obstruction through a home or workspace, the result is a feeling of ease, wellbeing and natural forward momentum in life. When chi is blocked, scattered, stagnant or rushing too quickly through a space, the occupants tend to experience corresponding difficulties in the areas of their lives governed by the affected areas of the home.

The bagua — the fundamental map of feng shui — divides any space into nine areas, each corresponding to a specific life domain: wealth and prosperity, fame and reputation, relationships and marriage, family and health, the centre (overall balance), children and creativity, knowledge and self-cultivation, career and life path, and helpful people and travel. By identifying which areas of your home correspond to which life domains and then assessing and optimising the energy in each, feng shui creates a living environment that actively supports every dimension of your wellbeing.

Simple Feng Shui Principles

The entry to your home is one of the most important areas in feng shui — it is where chi enters, and it should be welcoming, clear and unobstructed. Clutter anywhere in the home obstructs the flow of chi and creates stagnant energy that corresponds to stuck situations in life — the most impactful thing most people can do for their feng shui is to clear, sort and release what they no longer need. Mirrors placed carefully expand space and move energy; placed carelessly (directly opposite the front door, or facing the bed) they can cause problems. Natural elements — plants, natural materials, water features — support the flow of vital, living chi.

Feng Shui and Spiritual Practice

At its deepest level, feng shui is not merely interior design but a spiritual practice — a way of creating sacred, intentional space that reflects and supports your highest values and intentions. Combining feng shui with crystal placement, intention setting and regular energetic clearing of your space creates a home that is genuinely alive with supportive, nourishing energy.
