The heart chakra — Anahata in Sanskrit — sits at the very centre of the chakra system, bridging the lower three chakras (earth, body, personal power) with the upper three (expression, intuition, spiritual connection). It is, in the most literal energetic sense, the heart of who you are — the place where the human and the divine meet, where the personal and the universal touch.
Anahata governs love in all its forms — romantic love, parental love, self-love, compassion for others, and the unconditional love of the divine. When this chakra is open and balanced, love flows freely in all directions — you are able to give and receive with equal ease, to be both tender and strong, to hold others with compassion without losing yourself.
A closed or wounded heart chakra is extraordinarily common — for the simple reason that hearts get broken, and the protective response is to close. Signs of a blocked heart chakra include difficulty trusting others; an inability to receive love, compliments, or care gracefully; chronic loneliness even in the company of others; unresolved grief that does not move; a tendency to put everyone else's needs before your own; jealousy or possessiveness in relationships; and physical symptoms in the chest area including tight muscles, breathing difficulties, or cardiac issues.
Self-compassion practice: The heart chakra cannot open outward if it is closed inward. Begin with yourself. Speak to yourself with the same tenderness you would offer a dear friend. Acknowledge your own pain, your own effort, your own beauty. The more you can genuinely love yourself, the more freely love flows in all directions.
Gratitude: Gratitude and the heart chakra are intimately linked — gratitude opens the heart like a key turning in a lock. A regular gratitude practice — even a few moments each day of genuinely appreciating what you love about your life — keeps the heart chakra energised and expansive.
Green and pink crystals: Rose quartz is the heart chakra stone par excellence — unconditional, nurturing, endlessly gentle. Malachite draws out suppressed grief and facilitates transformation. Green aventurine opens the heart to new opportunities for love and joy.
Ho'oponopono and forgiveness: The heart chakra cannot remain open while carrying unforgiven resentment. Any forgiveness practice — of others and of yourself — directly heals and opens this chakra.
