There is a saying in tarot circles that the right deck does not so much get chosen as it makes itself known. You may find yourself repeatedly drawn to a particular deck, feeling an inexplicable pull toward its imagery, or simply knowing the moment you see it that it belongs with you. This intuitive recognition is worth honouring.
That said, with the sheer number of beautiful and diverse decks now available, a little guidance on how to navigate the choice is genuinely helpful — particularly for beginners.
For those new to tarot, most teachers recommend beginning with the Rider-Waite-Smith deck (originally published in 1910 and still widely available in its original form and numerous reprint editions). This deck established the illustrated minor arcana that most modern decks are based on, making it the easiest to learn from. The imagery is rich with symbolism but clear and accessible, and almost every tarot book and resource uses it as its reference point.
Other beginner-friendly classics include the Morgan-Greer deck, the Universal Waite, and the Everyday Witch Tarot — all of which are warm, clear, and easy to connect with.
As you progress, you may be drawn to decks with specific artistic styles or themes that resonate with your personal spiritual path. There are decks inspired by Celtic mythology, Norse tradition, Egyptian cosmology, the natural world, sacred feminine energy, and countless other traditions. The most important factor is always your personal response to the imagery — do the cards speak to you? Do they evoke emotion, curiosity, and recognition?
Avoid choosing a deck based solely on its reputation or beauty if the imagery itself does not feel alive to you. A deck you are drawn to intuitively will yield far richer readings than one you are merely impressed by.
Once you have chosen your deck, treat it with reverence. Store it in a cloth wrap, a wooden box, or a silk pouch. Keep a piece of clear quartz or selenite with it to maintain clear, high-vibrational energy. Cleanse it regularly — particularly after readings for others — by passing it through incense smoke, placing it in moonlight, or simply shuffling it with the intention of clearing any residual energy.
Many readers sleep with a new deck under their pillow for a few nights when they first receive it, allowing the energies to attune. Handle your cards often. The more you work with them, the deeper your intuitive connection becomes.
