Isis — whose name in ancient Egyptian means simply 'throne' — is perhaps the most universally beloved goddess in the history of human spirituality. Worshipped across ancient Egypt for over three thousand years, her cult spread throughout the Mediterranean world and into the Roman Empire, where temples to Isis were built from Britain to Persia. She endured — and her energy endures today — because she speaks to something utterly universal in the human experience: the fierce, tenacious, magical love that refuses to accept loss as the final word.
Isis is the wife of Osiris, the mother of Horus, the sister of Nephthys. But she is far more than her family roles suggest. She is a supreme magician — in the ancient texts, her magical knowledge surpasses even that of Ra, the sun god. She is a healer whose touch can restore what has been broken, revive what has been lost and transform what has been destroyed. She is the mistress of the mysteries — the keeper of the deepest knowledge of life, death and rebirth.
The myth at the heart of Isis's power is the story of her husband Osiris's murder at the hands of his brother Set, and her relentless quest to restore him. After Set dismembered Osiris and scattered his body across Egypt, it was Isis who searched tirelessly, gathered every fragment, and used her supreme magical knowledge to restore him and conceive their son Horus. This myth is a profound spiritual teaching about the power of love to overcome death, of healing to restore wholeness, and of the sacred feminine to hold and restore the broken masculine — and the broken world.
Isis brings extraordinary gifts to those who work with her energy. She is above all a healer — of bodies, of hearts, of relationships, of broken lives. If you are in a place of grief, loss, fragmentation or despair, her wings — depicted in ancient art as vast and sheltering — are extended over you right now. You need only turn toward her to feel them.
She is also a teacher of the deep mysteries — of birth, death, rebirth and transformation. Those on a path of serious spiritual development often find in Isis a demanding but extraordinarily gifted teacher who will not allow them to settle for surface knowledge when the depths are available to them.
And she is a fierce protector of mothers, children and the vulnerable. Her love for her son Horus — the lengths to which she went to protect and preserve him — makes her a potent ally for parents, carers and all who love fiercely and protectively.
Isis responds to devotion, sincerity and the willingness to be transformed. Light a dark blue or deep purple candle. Hold her symbol — the ankh, the symbol of eternal life — if you have one, or simply draw it on paper. Open your heart and speak to her: 'Isis, great goddess, I open myself to your healing and your wisdom. Help me find wholeness where I am broken, clarity where I am confused, and courage where I am afraid. I am ready to be transformed.'
