The Universal Life Force

The word Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is Japanese, combining two words: Rei, meaning universal or spiritual wisdom, and Ki, meaning life force energy — the same concept as chi in Chinese medicine, prana in Ayurvedic tradition, and the vital force recognised by healing traditions around the world. Reiki is therefore, literally, universally guided life force energy — a healing modality that works by channelling this fundamental life force through the practitioner and into the recipient, supporting the recipient's own healing intelligence and restoring balance at every level of their being.

Reiki was developed in Japan in the early twentieth century by Mikao Usui, who rediscovered and systematised what he understood to be an ancient healing method, following a period of intensive spiritual practice and meditation. From Japan, Reiki spread to the West in the 1970s and has since become one of the most widely practised complementary healing modalities in the world, with millions of practitioners across every continent.

How a Reiki Session Works

In a traditional Reiki session, the recipient lies fully clothed on a treatment couch in a comfortable, peaceful environment. The practitioner places their hands gently on or just above the body, in a sequence of positions that correspond to the major organs and energy centres. They are not generating the healing energy themselves — they are acting as a clear channel for universal life force energy, which flows through them and into the recipient according to the recipient's own highest need.

The experience of receiving Reiki varies between individuals but is almost universally described as deeply relaxing. Most people experience warmth or gentle tingling from the practitioner's hands, a profound sense of peace and often a feeling of something shifting or releasing in areas where they have been holding tension, emotion or physical discomfort. Many people fall into a deeply restful, meditative state — not quite sleep but something quieter and more spacious than ordinary waking consciousness.
