Runes — The Ancient Oracle of the Norse Tradition

By Caroline

The Language of the Elder Futhark

Runes are one of the oldest and most powerful divination systems in the Western tradition. Originally the writing system of the ancient Germanic and Norse peoples, runes carry far more than alphabetical meaning — each symbol is a portal into a deep well of cosmic wisdom, myth, and spiritual insight.

The word 'rune' itself means 'secret' or 'mystery' in Old Norse — and indeed, working with runes is to enter into relationship with the hidden forces that shape our world. According to Norse mythology, the god Odin hung himself upon the World Tree, Yggdrasil, for nine days and nights to receive the gift of the runes. This sacrifice speaks to the depth of knowledge the runes contain.

The Elder Futhark

The Elder Futhark is the oldest and most widely used runic alphabet, consisting of 24 symbols divided into three groups of eight, known as aettir. Each rune carries a name, a phonetic value, and a rich body of symbolic meaning drawn from Norse cosmology, nature, and the human experience.

Among the most well-known runes are Fehu (wealth, abundance, new beginnings), Uruz (primal strength, courage, vitality), Thurisaz (protection, boundaries, confronting challenges), Ansuz (communication, wisdom, divine breath), Raido (journey, movement, right action), and Kenaz (knowledge, fire, creative illumination).

How Rune Readings Work

In a rune reading, the querent draws one or more runes from a bag or pouch — either randomly or by intention — and the reader interprets their meaning in relation to the question asked. Readings can be a single rune for daily guidance, a three-rune spread covering past, present, and future, or more complex layouts that explore specific situations in depth.

Runes are not merely predictive tools — they are reflective ones. Rather than telling you what will happen, they illuminate what energies are present, what forces are at play, and what wisdom is available to you in navigating your situation. They invite you to step into co-creation with the universe rather than passive reception of fate.

Working with Your Own Runes

Many people choose to keep a personal set of runes for daily practice. Drawing a single rune each morning and meditating on its meaning is a beautiful way to begin the day with intention and awareness. Over time, you will develop an intimate relationship with these ancient symbols, and their wisdom will become second nature.

Rune sets are traditionally made from natural materials — wood, stone, or bone — and many practitioners choose to make their own, carving and colouring each rune by hand to create a deeply personal tool imbued with their own energy.
