Scrying — The Ancient Art of Mirror and Crystal Ball Divination

By Caroline

Gazing Into the Beyond

Scrying — the practice of gazing into a reflective or translucent surface to receive psychic visions and information — is one of the oldest divination practices known to humanity. From the obsidian mirrors of Aztec shamans to the crystal balls of European fortune tellers, from the still waters gazed into by ancient Greeks to the famous mirror of John Dee, the court astrologer of Elizabeth I — scrying has been practised across cultures and centuries as a powerful means of accessing information beyond ordinary perception.

How Scrying Works

The principle behind scrying is the same as that underlying all psychic work: by focusing attention softly on a single point — the surface of a crystal ball, a dark mirror, or a bowl of still water — the conscious, analytical mind is gently bypassed, and the deeper channels of intuitive perception are opened. The surface acts as a focus point, not a source of information — the information comes through the practitioner's own expanded consciousness.

Beginners sometimes expect to see vivid, detailed images in the crystal ball, as in the movies. In practice, scrying images are more often subtle — shifts in the depth or clarity of the surface, fleeting impressions, colours, or symbols that arise in the mind's eye rather than physically within the object. With practice, these impressions become clearer and more reliable.

Choosing Your Scrying Tool

Crystal Ball: Clear quartz or obsidian spheres are the traditional scrying tools. The sphere's perfect symmetry and the way light moves through or across it creates ideal conditions for the soft, receptive gaze that scrying requires. Size matters more than you might expect — larger spheres are generally easier to work with, as there is more surface area to engage the gaze.

Black Mirror: A piece of glass painted black on the back, or a piece of polished obsidian. The perfect depth and darkness of a black mirror can be deeply conducive to visions, and many practitioners find it easier than a crystal ball.

Water: The oldest scrying medium of all. A dark bowl filled with still water, perhaps with a few drops of black ink added, can be a remarkably effective tool. Working by candlelight enhances the experience.

A Simple Scrying Practice

Sit comfortably in a dimly lit room, your scrying tool before you. Breathe deeply and relax. Let your gaze become soft and unfocused — not staring, not looking at the surface, but gazing into or through it. Hold a question gently in your mind. Notice any changes in the surface: haziness, misting, darkening, or the appearance of shapes. Note also any impressions that arise in your mind's eye. Trust what arrives. Record it immediately in a journal.
