Shamanism — Ancient Healing for the Modern Soul

By Caroline

The World's Oldest Spiritual Tradition

Long before organised religions took shape, before temples were built or doctrines written, human beings communed with the spirit world through the practices of shamanism. Archaeologists have found evidence of shamanic practice dating back at least 40,000 years — making it quite possibly the oldest spiritual tradition in human history.

Shamanism is not a religion in the conventional sense. It is a practice — a set of techniques for entering altered states of consciousness to access spiritual guidance, healing, and wisdom. Shamanic traditions exist independently on every inhabited continent, in remarkably similar forms, suggesting that this way of working with spirit is somehow written into the deep structure of human consciousness itself.

What Is a Shaman?

A shaman is a spiritual practitioner who acts as an intermediary between the human and spirit worlds. The word 'shaman' originates from the Tungus people of Siberia, but the role it describes exists under many names across all cultures — medicine man, witch doctor, healer, seer.

The shaman's defining characteristic is the ability to enter intentional altered states of consciousness — achieved through drumming, chanting, dancing, breathwork, or the use of sacred plant medicines — and to journey in these states to other dimensions of reality to seek guidance, healing, and lost soul fragments on behalf of those they serve.

Core Shamanic Concepts

The Three Worlds: Shamanic cosmology typically describes three realms — the Lower World (the realm of nature spirits and power animals), the Middle World (the realm of this ordinary reality and its spirits), and the Upper World (the realm of higher guides, teachers, and ancestors).

Power Animals: Each person is understood to have one or more power animals — animal spirit helpers that lend their specific strengths and medicine to the human they support. Connecting with your power animal is often the first journey undertaken in shamanic practice.

Soul Retrieval: In shamanic understanding, trauma can cause parts of the soul to fragment and leave — a protective mechanism of the psyche in overwhelming circumstances. Soul retrieval is the shamanic practice of journeying to find and return these lost soul parts, often producing remarkable healing of long-standing patterns and symptoms.

Neo-Shamanism and Modern Practice

A growing number of people in the modern world are being called to shamanic healing — both as recipients and as practitioners. Core shamanism, as developed by anthropologist Michael Harner, offers the essential techniques in a form accessible to contemporary Westerners, stripped of cultural specificity but fully preserving the transformative power of the original practices.
