Forgiveness — The Most Powerful Spiritual Act

By Caroline

What Forgiveness Really Is

Of all the spiritual practices available to us, forgiveness may be the most misunderstood — and the most powerful. It is not about pretending that what happened did not hurt. It is not about excusing harm, condoning behaviour, or reconciling with someone who has not changed. It is not about them at all, in the end.

Forgiveness is about you. It is the act of releasing the energetic hold that resentment, anger, and hurt have on your body, your energy field, and your future. It is the decision — sometimes made again and again — to stop allowing the past to colonise the present.

What Resentment Does to the Body

Holding onto resentment is, as the famous saying goes, like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die. Research has consistently shown that chronic resentment and unforgiveness are associated with elevated stress hormones, compromised immune function, increased risk of cardiovascular disease, depression, and anxiety. The body pays an enormous price for carrying what the heart cannot release.

From an energetic perspective, resentment creates a cord — an ongoing energetic connection with the person who caused harm, through which your own energy continues to flow toward them. Unforgiveness keeps you in relationship with the very person you most want to be free of.

Forgiveness Is a Process, Not an Event

One of the most important things to understand about forgiveness is that it rarely happens in a single moment of grace. For most people, with most wounds, it is a gradual process — sometimes taking months or years, and sometimes requiring the decision to forgive to be made again and again before it finally settles into genuine release.

This is not failure. It is the honest, human reality of working with deep pain. Each time you choose forgiveness again, you are loosening the grip of the wound a little further.

The Ho'oponopono Practice

Ho'oponopono is an ancient Hawaiian forgiveness practice that has become widely used in modern spiritual circles. Its simplicity is deceptive — the practice consists of repeating four phrases: 'I'm sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.' These are addressed inwardly — to the divine, to the other person, and to oneself — and work to dissolve the energetic charge of grievances and restore wholeness. Many people report profound shifts in long-standing resentments through regular practice of this simple technique.

Forgiving Yourself

For many people, the hardest forgiveness of all is directed toward the self. The guilt, shame, and self-recrimination we carry for our own choices and mistakes can be the deepest wound of all. Self-forgiveness is not self-indulgence — it is the recognition that you are a growing, learning soul, doing your best with the consciousness and tools available to you at each moment.
